100 days. Non-GMO Moon & Stars Watermelon Seeds, (Citrullus lanatus var. “Moon & Stars”), is one of the most unique heirloom watermelons you’ll ever grow. It grows to be a large dark oval, weighing in at about 25 lbs. Expect a deep dark green rind with glossy spots reminiscent of stars. Inside is a sweet pink flesh.

Moon & Stars Organic Watermelon - Garden Seed

Moon & Stars Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus var. “Moon & Stars”), will offer a glimpse into the ‘old world’ of watermelons before mass-agriculture refined them into the ultra-smooth uniform varieties we see today. A matured Moon & Stars will be round or oval, yet bumpy and spotted. Inside the flesh is sweet but not over powering.

Moon & Stars Watermelon is grown similarly to other watermelons. Put it in warm soil and let it grow in full sun. Grow outside in zones 3-9. Anywhere in zones colder than zone 3 will have to be grown in a greenhouse and given plenty of artificial light.

When the surface of this watermelon transitioning from shiny to dull and the bottom, where the fruit meets the grown, is yellow, it is time to harvest.

Sowing: Can be sown indoors 4-6 week before the last frost date or outdoors when night temperatures are above 60° F for two weeks. This will result in an Autumn crop. Plant 6-8 seeds ½ inch down and cover with ¼ inch of soil.

Transplanting: First, “harden off” your plant for up to 14 days before transplanting. Prep the bed, by turning the soil under 8 inches. Dig a whole big enough for the entire root structure. Loosen the dirt around the root structure, and place the plant in the whole covering the roots. Water thoroughly. Holes should be at least 12 inches apart.

Soil Preference: A rich fertile loam, well-drained and warm. Prefers a light acidic soil.

Other Tips:Try all of the methods to check for ripeness. Give the thick rind a thump. A dull sound usually means it’s ready. Check the bottom. If it is a cream color rather than white, it may be ready. Scratch the rind. If it comes off fairly easily, that may also be a sign of ripeness.
