Growing Supernova Primula Garden Seeds

  • Taxonomy: Primula x polyantha
  • Other Names: Primrose
  • Seed Type: Annual
  • Sow Indoors or Outdoors: Supernova primula thrives in cool temperatures and is best sown outside directly 4 – 6 weeks before the final frost, as frost and cooler temperatures will aid primula seeds in germination. For earliest blooming, start seeds indoors 8 – 10 weeks before the final frost and transplant once there are two sets of true leaves to a cool and well-shaded spot in the garden. Primula is not recommended for maturing indoors since many homes do not have the cool temperatures required at night.
  • Days to Maturity: 84 - 91 days
  • Hardiness Zone: 3 - 8
  • Planting Depth: Plant 2 - 3 seeds ¼” deep
  • Plant Spacing: 6”
  • Growth Habit: 8” tall compact shrub with a tidy 5 – 6” spread covered in 2” blooms
  • Soil Preference: Hummus-rich, organically fertile, well-drained
  • Light Preference: Partial shade - full shade
  • Diseases/Pests/Troubleshooting: Primula plants generally do not thrive in pots and containers. Use only a half-strength fertilizer because it can build up in the soil and cause problems. Monitor for slugs and snails on young Supernova plants and then for aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs, and other leaf eaters as plants reaches maturity.
  • Color: Mix of salmon, fuchsia, canary, indigo, magenta, ivory, and peach
